Schools throughout the city stand to lose more than $60 million in federal funding after failing to reach an agreement on teacher and principal evaluations.
The Department of Education (DOE) and the United Federation of Teachers had until Dec. 31 to create plans that meet new state guidelines for evaluations so they can be used for promotions, retention, tenure and layoffs.
More than 20 low-performing schools, including Lehman High School, that receive improvement grants will now lose that money. Education Commissioner John King Jr. said that the schools agreed to develop the evaluations when they singed their grant applications.
