The city's housing authority held a town hall meeting Thursday at Saint Francis College in Downtown Brooklyn to discuss upcoming changes to NYCHA polices.
The main topic is the mayor's proposed plan to modernize NYCHA. It calls for improvements and repairs to public housing complexes.
There will also be a new flat rate rent, depending on annual income, household and apartment size. Some tenants say an increase could leave them without enough money to pay for other necessities.
NYCHA officials say the goal is to combat the more than $90 million debt the organization sustains.
Michael Kelly, NYCHA's general manager, says that the agency's debt is so dramatic that the city could actually lose its public housing system, as has happened in Chicago and Atlanta.
