Police are giving their own account of what happened after an officer was accused of stealing $1,300 during a stop-and-frisk in Coney Island last month.
Cellphone video was released of the incident, alleging that the cop is seen taking money from a man's pocket and then pepper-spraying him when he asks for it back.
According to the NYPD, the officer in the video removed a cellphone and $62 after discovering a bulge while frisking a suspect. The department says the suspect then pushed away and aggressively approached the officer, forcing him to administer pepper spray in an attempt to apprehend him.
The police spokesperson goes on to say that further investigation of the suspect, who was able to flee the scene, revealed that he has an active criminal court warrant.
The NYPD adds that the $62 and cellphone have been vouchered at the police precinct for the man to pick up, but he hasn't attempted to do so. It says he instead appeared at the Kings County District Attorney's Office with his lawyer to make allegations about the $1,300.
