The NYPD announced a decrease in crime for January this year, compared to the same month in 2015.
Officials reported a roughly 1 percent decrease in overall crime, but noted a 45 percent drop in murders and 34 percent less shootings across the city.
Mayor Bill de Blasio, who attended the news conference on the issue, praised the NYPD's work.
He credited what he called the "growing bonds between police and the community" for a role in increasing safety on the city's streets.
But some types of crimes actually increased, including assaults and grand larcenies.
