Three NYPD officers were honored Wednesday for their bravery during New Year's Day attack in Times Square.

Authorities say Trevor Bickford, 19, lunged at a group of NYPD officers and sliced one in the head with a machete and cut another before he was shot in the shoulder by an officer. The attack took place before 10 p.m.

Investigators say the attacker was inspired by radical Islamic extremism. The U.S. District Attorney's Office says Bickford traveled to New York City to "wage jihad against government officials."

Mayor Eric Adams personally thanked the three officers for exemplifying what it means to be an NYPD officer.

If convicted on federal terrorism charges, Bickford faces a mandatory life sentence.
