City officials announced $7.5 million worth of new NYPD safety equipment Monday at the 84th Precinct in Brooklyn.

Commissioner Bill Bratton and Mayor Bill de Blasio told police officers their department would receive 20,000 new helmets and 6,000 heavy-duty bulletproof vests. They will begin arriving at precinct buildings over the next several months.

Bratton says the new vests are capable of stopping bullets fired from powerful weapons -- similar to the guns used in recent attacks on police officers around the country.

The new vests are meant for use only in certain situations and are worn over an officer's normal vest, Bratton says.

The helmets are similar to those American soldiers use in combat.

"We have to make sure we're taking every measure available to protect our officers with the latest gear and the latest technology given the horrible scourge of guns in this country," says Mayor de Blasio.
