The NYPD responded with statistics to Legal Aid Society's claim that New York City over $120 million in police misconduct lawsuits.
The Legal Aid Society released numbers saying the city paid out more than $121 million in police misconduct lawsuits for 2022. It's the highest payout in at least five years, Legal Aid Society says, slamming the NYPD for putting taxpayers on the hook for officers' conduct and not dishing out proper discipline.
The NYPD says those numbers don't paint an accurate picture. An NYPD spokesperson told News 12 that nearly 60% of the total payout sum can be attributed to seven wrongful conviction cases dating back to events that happened between 1965 and 2010.
Police also say total payouts of the lawsuits filed and disposed of last year amount to $16.8 million, $13 million of which stems from one wrongful conviction case from 1965.
