The NYPD, the nation's largest police force, is set to gain nearly 1,300 new officers. 

The new hires are coming as part of a $78.5 billion budget agreement reached at City Hall Monday night. They'll join the 35,000 officers already on the force. 

The news comes at a time where the city is seeing a spike in crime in some neighborhoods. NYPD figures show that overall crime is down, but shootings and murders are up. 

Out of the roughly 1,300 new cops, about 300 will be assigned to counterterrorism. The deal will also include the hiring of 400 administrative workers to take over desk jobs currently being filled by police officers.
