Prospect Heights is now the new site for affordable housing in the borough.
Mayor Bill de Blasio, Brooklyn officials and community members broke ground at 535 Carlton Ave. Monday. The development will bring 298 units to Pacific Park, formerly known as the Atlantic Yards site.
The mayor says the apartments will be affordable to low, moderate, and middle income households. It will be a mix of studios and apartments with bedrooms for families. The ground floor will also have retail space.
Some residents and public officials have slammed the city for taking too long to build the affordable units. It was part of the promise that was made to bring the Barclays Center to Brooklyn. The mayor says he is going to fast-track the delivery of affordable housing.
Mayor de Blasio says tenants will be picked through a lottery process run by the city. The apartments are expected to open in fall 2016.
