The Department of Buildings confirms a building in Borough Park was evacuated following the discovery of illegal work in the basement compromising the building's integrity.
The FDNY says they were called to the building located at 4113-4119 13th Ave. Sunday morning due to concerns about the building's stability.
The Department of Buildings also responded to investigate.
Their preliminary report revealed illegal excavation work in the basement without DOB permits. They also noted walls had been penetrated. Residents of the building were forced to evacuate.
The Red Cross says they are currently helping three households consisting of 12 adults and four children.
According to property records, Kosher Mehadrin Operations took ownership of the building in August. The storefronts were previously a men's clothing store and an orthodontics office.
People familiar with the landlord say the stores have sat vacant and that the owner also owns Mehudar Meat Deli on the same street.
News 12 visited the deli to try and speak with the owner but was unsuccessful in doing so.
