The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner and the Office of the Brooklyn Borough President will be holding a missing persons day resource event on Tuesday.
NYC OCME says the event has helped people in New York City and beyond to make identifications for more than a decade, and now it's being held in Brooklyn for the first time.
Kevin McKenna, a forensic scientist with NYC OCME, says he's hoping the event can reach even more people.
“I've interviewed families who had missing loved ones for decades. And the emotion that comes out when they discuss them is as if they went missing yesterday, because that uncertainty persists through time. We know how much it means to them. So, we find it very important to use the skills that we have for this purpose," said McKenna.
The event welcomes all, but is targeted towards people who have been missing someone for more than 60 days. The event is free and will provide resources in multiple languages.
“Bringing it to Brooklyn has been really great for us, because now we can serve some of those families who may not have been able to use our resources," said McKenna.
People who attend can connect with the office, provide information, do an interview, and provide a DNA sample to help identify the missing person if they choose.
“We can offer you resources for free, confidential, any time you need. You can come to this event in Brooklyn, or you can come see us any other day. We are here for you, and we're going to help you and to the best of our ability with what resources," said McKenna.
Event organizers say appointments for the event are encouraged, and you can call (212)-323-1201 to make an appointment.
The event will be on Tuesday, Nov. 10, from 10 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. at the Brooklyn Borough Hall community room on Journalemon Street in Downtown Brooklyn.
