Elected officials in the Bronx and the rest of the city are demanding more security on school buses. The push was motivated when the Daily News published several accounts of sexual abuse on school buses that weren't noticed or punished. The city's Public Advocate, Betsy Gotbaum (D-NYC) says the Department of Education now needs to coordinate school abuse investigations with the NYPD and the Administration for Children's Services (ACS).It coincides with a bill introduced in the state Assembly and the Senate that would require video cameras on all school buses throughout New York. A separate bill would require all bus monitors to be fingerprinted and be investigated for prior criminal convictions. Currently, only drivers are subjected to that process. The Daily News claims Schools Chancellor Joel Klein is considering an increase in the number of investigators for school bus incidents.
