Authorities say a police officer shot and injured a gun-wielding man early this morning after he allegedly fired at officers.
Police say they received a report of a dispute involving a man with a gun on Hendrix Street at around 4:30 a.m. When they arrived, the 23-year-old suspect allegedly began shooting at officers.
One of the officers returned fire, hitting the man in the chest. He was taken to Brookdale Hospital in stable condition, and is in police custody.
Investigators say the male officer involved is from the 75th Precinct and was not hurt, but he was taken to the hospital due to ringing in his ears.
A witness to the dispute that triggered the incident said they heard someone pleading with the gunman not to shoot, then gunshots were heard and people began running away.
A weapon was recovered at the scene that they believe was the weapon used in the shooting.
Police say charges are expected to be filed against the man.
