Officials, local organizations and residents rallied at Canarsie pier Sunday calling on the city to bring NYC Ferry service to Canarsie.
Officials said they plan on introducing a bill that would do just that next week.
Event organizers said historical records from the Brooklyn Public Library say there was a ferry service to Canarsie Pier early in the 1900s. Residents like Andrenia Burgis say they want to bring it back.
“It’s not reinventing the wheel. It's just bringing back some things that we had. And that's things that made this community attractive," Burgis said.
Founder of the Flossy Organization Jibreel Jalloh says Canarsie is in a transportation desert and this would give commuters more options.
“Canarsie has one train line, a couple of bus lines, and they are overpacked. The train is running behind and having another way to get around is really important. I’ve never seen a traffic jam on the water,"Jalloh said.
Calvin Sennon, owner of TriniJam BK, says it would also help local businesses.
"People come to our businesses from around from all over. So this is just another avenue, not just to expose my business, but all the local businesses," Sennon said.
Jalloh also says it's a safe way to travel.
“I haven’t seen any headlines about crime on the ferry. I believe it’s a safe option to get around," said Jalloh.
