Officials say a shark bit a surfer on the leg at Smith Point Beach early Wednesday.
The beach was temporarily closed for swimming. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone says swimming has resumed.
The incident happened around 8 a.m. It is the second shark bite in 10 days at the same location.
News 12 has learned the swimmer reported being bitten by a tiger shark while in the water.
That person then reported the incident to a parks employee.
Mastic Beach Ambulance Company responded to treat the person. Officials say the surfer had a 4-inch gash on the leg from the bite.
"He was knocked off the paddle board, took a punch at the shark and saw the shark coming back around toward them," Bellone says. "And after that initial bite occurred and then at that moment, fortunately, a wave hit that carried the surfer and the paddle board into shore."
Beachgoers say they are being extra cautious when they head into the water.
"I do look down a little bit more," says Sue Palmer, of Miller Place. "And it's good to have the lifeguard here - they check the waters."
Drones are now flying overhead as lifeguards are keeping close watch, and a Suffolk police boat remains nearby.
The surfer who was bitten Wednesday was taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK.
