Oklahoma State head coach and Bed-Stuy native Mike Boynton is getting to spend Thanksgiving at home this year, thanks to some scheduling luck.
His team will be participating in the Legends Classic at the Barclays Center.
"It's something you never really can dream of, it all coming together to bring the first team that I coached within two weeks of being a head coach during the season back to a place that I’m very familiar with,” says Boynton.
Boynton played high school basketball at Bishop Loughlin and then the University of South Carolina. His hiring as Oklahoma State coach was a surprising one to many, and even after 12 years as an assistant, it was his early years in Brooklyn he leaned on.
While the Barclays Center hadn't been built when he was at Loughlin, he says many of his old stomping grounds are still around. However, most of his players have never been to New York before, making Boynton the honorary tour guide into Times Square.
"As a kid from Brooklyn, you never go to see the ball drop, and just knowing what it means to people who don't live here and for our team to come experience is something I’ll remember forever,” he says.
