An opera singer from Bed-Stuy wants people to know the music genre is very much alive in Brooklyn.
Nicole Joy Mitchell is sharing her gift of singing while delivering her message. "Opera is not so farfetched,” says Mitchell. “Don't be afraid of it."
The Brooklyn Public Library is hosting an event with the American Opera Projects and the Walt Whitman Project as a way to open up people to new experiences. Mitchell will be there to teach her community about opera.
Mitchell says opera is about storytelling and is very relatable.
“Brooklyn is not just hip-hop, it's not just rap music,” says Mitchell. “I did grow up on it and I was all into it, but my heart came to opera and classical music.”
