Greenpoint and North Williamsburg have joined the growing list of communities participating in organic waste collection. 

The Department of Sanitation announced the newest additions to its pilot program Tuesday. It says 31 percent of all waste generated by New York City residents is organic and does not need to be sent to a landfill, which can be costly. 

Everyone who participates will receive rodent resistant bins for their homes to help dispose of appropriate items, such as food and yard waste. The bins will then be collected by sanitation workers once a week. 

This latest expansion adds roughly 33,000 households to the program, bringing the total to 133,000 participating homes citywide.
