The New York Police Department has released a new alarming report about weapons in city schools.
Members of the NYPD School Safety Division say that in the 2013-2014 school year more than 1,200 weapons were confiscated from city students. Among them were firearms, Tasers, knives, box cutters and razors.
School safety officials believe that some of these students are carrying weapons to protect themselves in dangerous neighborhoods or in conflicts with other students.
Officials credit metal detectors for picking up about 58 percent of the weapons, while the rest were discovered after tips from staff or students.
Authorities say there are metal detectors used daily in 79 city high schools and junior highs. Another eight schools have metal detectors, but use them at random. In addition, the NYPD says it does unannounced scanning with mobile units at other schools.
