People are seeking answers from the Elizabeth Board of Education after an elementary school principal is accused of making racist remarks.

The incident happened in February. A student with special needs at Mabel G Holmes School Number 5 reportedly addressed two staff members using a racial slur.

Principal Yvonne McGovern then allegedly told the student the slur was offensive and suggested he use another derogatory phrase.

The Elizabeth Schools superintendent has since suspended McGovern, who underwent racial sensitivity training and is now a vice principal at another school.

But now parents and residents are wondering why McGovern is on staff within the district at all.

"The board must remedy this situation right now to ensure that we are literally demanding accountability and justice,” says Kason Little of Black Lives Matter Elizabeth. “She needs to be out of our schools. Her principalship needs to be taken away and she needs to be terminated - effective immediately.”

News 12 New Jersey reached out to Elizabeth Public Schools for comment. A district official says they cannot further discuss the incident.
