Parents of students attending Brooklyn day care centers took their fight to stay open to the steps of the agency that funds them.
The Administration for Children's Services (ACS) is cutting funding for 15 of the borough's facilities, including Bedford-Stuyvesant's Irving Place Child Development Center. The center opened its doors in the 1970s and serves 13 Brooklyn zip codes, as well as three in Queens. ACS says the facility is consistently under enrollment goals. However, 50 children are currently enrolled. Some centers are set to close by the end of February.
Parents worry about where their children will go after school. Councilwoman Letitia James (WF-35th District) believes the closures are about money, which she says she doesn't understand since the city has a large surplus. James is calling for hearings on the matter.
