Congregants at a historic church in Park Slope are trying to raise money to reconstruct the crumbling ceiling of the building's main sanctuary. Located near the intersection of Carroll Street and 7th Avenue, the Old First Reformed Church closed its sanctuary in September after pieces of the plaster ceiling crashed onto the pews below. Sunday services still take place in a small side room, but parishioners say they miss the original venue. "We've lost the people who come in here during the week to pray," says church Pastor Daniel Meeter. "We can't offer the sacred space for the community." Church officials say they received an estimate of around $800,000 to fix the ceiling, a price they are not able to afford. They say they plan on holding fundraisers to open the doors by Easter 2013.
