The pedestrian bridge on Ocean Avenue in Sheepshead Bay is getting a makeover. The bridge has been around since 1880.
Construction began in October and is expected to finish in the spring of 2025.
News 12 spoke with people like Leo Landman who walk the bridge everyday.
"Nails come out, it's shaky, the wood is shaky," said Landman.
The New York City Department of Transportation says the project will cost around $1.7 million. The bridge will have $75,000 in grants going toward it. Assemblyman Michael Novakhov says it's a distinguishing element of the neighborhood.
“We love this bridge. It’s a beautiful bridge first of all, but it’s a functional bridge. It’s a lifeline, people use it to get from Sheepshead Bay to Manhattan Beach. This is a necessity for this neighborhood," said Novakhov.
Novakhov says despite signage, cyclists and moped riders use the bridge, which is not only a safety issue, but causes wear and tear on the bridge.
“It’s a safety issue for the people, for the pedestrians, and for the bridge itself. So please don't ride your bikes and scooters on the bridge," said Novakhov.
Novakhov says it will become even more important once the bridge is completed. The NYPD has helped to monitor the bridge. Right now, he says they don't plan on issuing fines but if the issue persists that may change.
The bridge is operating on an altered schedule while construction continues.
