Shelton police have arrested three teens on assault charges after a fight that later led to the deadly stabbing of 17-year-old Fairfield Prep student Jimmy McGrath.

A detective on this case made it clear to News 12 that the investigation is far from over and it's possible more charges will be filed.

Police charged a 16-year-old and two 17-year-olds for assault in a second round of arrests on Thursday. It is related to an altercation that happened the night of May 14 at a home on Lazy Brook Road in Shelton, where a 16-year-old was assaulted.

A larger fight broke out on Laurel Glen Drive a short time after the altercation. That's where McGrath, who appeared to be a bystander according to an arrest warrant, was stabbed to death.

Police arrested Raul “Lito” Valle, who was 16 years old at the time, in May for murder. Valle is being tried as an adult.

"This is an isolated incident. We have kids that fight, usually one of them doesn't pull out a knife and fatally stab someone. So I would say that's definitely out of character and doesn't happen often, actually it's the first time in my career and I've been here 22 years,” said Detective Richard Bango.

McGrath's dad says they're fighting until they get justice in this case. He emphasized that not only is his family hurting, but the entire community.

McGrath's family hopes their case sets a precedent for juvenile crimes.

"I don't want everyone to kind of lose focus because this is going to be a long process, we're thinking going on two years," said Kevin McGrath, Jimmy McGrath's father. "But we want to keep it up and front on everyone's mind...because it's not something that just happened with Jimmy, you've seen just across the state of Connecticut and country -- all the juvenile crime."

Police and McGrath's family are asking anyone with information on the incident to continue coming forward.
