A woman was found dead with a cord around her neck at a residence in Brooklyn Friday, police say.
Police say they responded to Powell Street after receiving a 911 call at around 5 p.m. Officers say Juanita Cabarello, 78, was found unconscious and unresponsive in her hallway. She was initially discovered by her son.
Emergency Medical Services pronounced Cabarello dead at the scene. It is unknown if there is any criminality.
A medical examiner will determine the cause of death.
Elected officials say it’s the third death of a resident in the building in just four years, and they are now pushing for more safety measures by having security cameras installed.
Councilmember Inez Barron and Tenant Association President Diane Johnson say there are some cameras in the building, but not enough.
Barron says the New York City Housing Association had planned to install more cameras in the building, but the process was stopped due to the pandemic.
A representative from NYCHA says, "This building currently has a lobby camera, security doors and locks, and a security guard and we are also working diligently with our city partners to expedite the installation of CCTV cameras."
Police say there was no sign of forced entry in Cabarello's case, and they say that criminality is not suspected at this time.
