He has been identified as 38-year-old Gregory Fernandez.
Two other people impacted by the fire are said to have serious injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
One resident of the building showed News 12 the water damage to her apartment as a result of that fire. She lives one floor below, where it all started.
While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, the FDNY is warning drivers about parking near hydrants.
They say two cars were parked near hydrants closest to the building, and it delayed the response from firefighters.
“Cars parked on hydrants are part of the reason we have the outcome that we have here today,” said Fire Commissioner Robert Tucker.
The owner of the building did not want to speak on camera.
