Police in Manchester Township issued over 100 summonses over the weekend after finding hundreds of people partying at an abandoned strip mine on private property.
Police say it's an ongoing issue. Partiers from all over New Jersey and the surrounding states take their off-road vehicles, and even watercraft vehicles, to a 7,000-acre site known as Heritage Minerals, a now-defunct strip mine with several lakes. Over the years, it's become a popular place but also been the site of drownings, fatal crashes and forest fires.
Officers from the New Jersey State Police and Manchester and Toms River townships wrote 131 citations.
“There are a lot of dangers, so yeah, we may be spoiling someone's good time, but the bottom line is we are keeping people safe, and we are enforcing the law by keeping people off private property,” says Capt. Vincent Manco.
Police say they will continue to enforce the no trespassing laws at the former strip mine. Penalties could range from thousands of dollars of fines to jail time.
