A man is dead after being hit by a garbage truck Thursday morning.

Police say they have arrested and charged 33-year-old Aaron Gilchrist, who has been working for the Department of Sanitation since 2005.

The incident happened around 7 a.m. Police say the driver of a DSNY truck was driving the wrong way down a one-way street. They say while he was driving westbound on Eastern Parkway, he tried to make a right turn going northbound onto Brooklyn Avenue. That's when Gilchrist allegedly hit the victim.

News 12 is told that the victim, whose identity has not yet been released, was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

DSNY has suspended Gilchrist and says it will continue to cooperate with police.
