? A driver trying to escape a traffic stop in a stolen car was fatally shot by a police officer on Remsen Avenue Friday, police say.According to authorities, police were following a silver Mustang occupied by 25-year-old Ortanzso Bobell and two other passengers when they discovered that the car was stolen after running its New Jersey plates. Police pulled Bobell over, who initially complied. Police say Bobell then hit the gas pedal, crashing into parked cars and smashing the fence of a nearby auto shop. The officers got out of their cruiser and ordered Bobell several times to exit his vehicle.Instead, police say Bobell drove the car in reverse and hit a lieutenant. As the officer fell to the ground, his gun discharged, firing a bullet into Bobell?s torso. Even after getting shot, police say Bobell continued operating the vehicle until it crashed into a building. He was rushed to Kings County Hospital, where he later died. The brother of the suspect says Bobell was not aware the car was stolen, and even though he may have been breaking the law, he did not deserve to be fatally shot. The two passengers in the car, an 18-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy, have been arrested.Police say the lieutenant that was hit by the car is expected to recover fully.
