A portion of 56th Street that was shut down due to a giant sinkhole has reopened in Brooklyn, according to city officials.
Repair crews have made significant progress patching the sinkhole that opened up on 56th Street between 5th and 6th avenues in Sunset Park on March 1.
Officials from the Department of Environmental Protection say the sinkhole was caused by a leak in private water service lines.
Residents say the sinkhole started as a small pothole but eventually grew to become much larger after cars continued to drive over it.
