Some residents say they are concerned about the future of the Coney Island boardwalk as it moves closer to landmark status.
The city Landmarks Preservation Commission is considering the nearly 100-year-old boardwalk for scenic landmark status, but some residents say that won't protect its wooden boards.
Residents say repairing the boardwalk with concrete or cement, which has been done in some sections, does not have the same iconic look and feel.
The commission says that scenic landmark status would "recognize the historic and cultural importance of the Boardwalk while protecting its physical presence along the coastline and its general parameters including the configuration of the boardwalk."
The commission adds that any final decision about materials would be made by the Public Design Commission.
"The PDC will review any proposed design from the Parks Department in context of the history, existing conditions of the site and surrounding areas, while also considering durability, resiliency, and maintainability of materials," the Public Design Commission said in a statement.
