Some Bronx residents are questioning a new plan to bring concrete pedestrian islands known as "bulbs" to busy intersections in Castle Hill.

As part of the proposal by the Department of Transportation (DOT), the concrete buildouts would be installed at crossroads at Buhre, Zerega, Castle and Middletown avenues to help pedestrians and bus riders.

"I think it's a great idea," says Katherine Woods. "Every time you get off the bus, cars are coming by. You can get run over."

However, not everyone supports the plan. Business owner Robert Beider says he's already responsible for cleaning up the sidewalk in front of his store, and if the concrete extensions are installed, it'll mean more work for his employees.

Beider adds that because drivers won't be able to park on the "bulbs," his customers may choose to shop elsewhere.

The DOT says it'll be in touch with Community Board 10 to address some of the business owners' concerns.
