An elementary school in Sheepshead Bay is dedicating its cafeteria to a school aide who lost her battle with breast cancer almost a year ago.

Staff and students at P.S. 254 honored the memory of Mary Colgan, who worked in the school system for 43 years.

Her family was on hand during a special ceremony Tuesday that included songs and speeches about her good nature. Staff and students say Colgan was the heart and soul of the school, and her daughter told News 12 that the school was like a second family to her mom.

Colgan was an avid Jets and Mets fan, and both teams donated memorabilia to the school in her honor. The Jets gave a signed football from Rex Ryan, while the Mets sent 700 T-shirts.

Every year, the school will give the "Mary Colgan - You Have to Believe Award" to a student who exhibits a positive attitude and leads by example.
