PUREGYM could face $12,500 fine, 75-person limit from DOB violations at four Brooklyn locations

The New York City Department of Buildings has cited four PureGym locations in Brooklyn for operating without required assembly certificates after inspections that were prompted by a referral from FDNY, the agency said.
The following locations were identified during a DOB audit: 287 Broadway, 892 Broadway, 1000 Gates Ave. and 3779 Nostrand Ave.
DOB inspectors visited the gyms and found each location operating without a valid Place of Assembly Certificate of Operation(PACO).
The certificate is required for any indoor space that holds 75 or more people at one time. All four Brooklyn gyms received violations, which will be heard at the Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings.
An administrative law judge will decide whether to uphold or dismiss the violations, and penalties could reach up to $12,500 per violation if they are sustained. PureGym would be allowed to defend its claim or to make the modifications.
According to DOB, the gyms must either limit occupancy to fewer than 75 people or obtain the required certificate to operate legally.
In a statement to News 12, PureGym said that "As part of the standard completion of work permitting process, we are working with our architects to obtain the required PACOS from the DOB and have already received approval on many PureGym locations across New York."
DOB says inspectors also reviewed the gym’s pod‑style entrances during the site visits.
City records show the owners had obtained work permits for entrance modifications through the agency’s Professional Certification program.
DOB says their audit found that PureGym had not provided sufficient documentation for the power‑operated pod doors.
On Feb. 4, DOB notified the chain that the missing materials must be submitted, or the department will revoke the approvals.
The audit remains open, as the required documentation has still not been received, according to DOB.
However, the agency told News 12, "The Brooklyn Borough Commissioner’s Office is in contact with the applicant, and there are no plans to revoke the approvals at this time."
In a statement to News 12, PureGym said that they "We are in the final stages of this process at four of our gyms in Brooklyn and are working to resolve minor outstanding items, which do not relate in any way to the entry pods or member safety. We will continue working constructively with the DOB throughout this process and await their final inspections in due course."
