A blast of Arctic cold is moving into the New York City area late Friday and will stick around through at least the middle of next week. Friday night will be especially dangerous, with temperatures dropping into the single digits and strong winds making it feel like 5 to 10 degrees below zero. A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect, meaning conditions could be dangerous for anyone spending time outdoors, including unhoused individuals, pets, and those without adequate heat. Saturday will likely be one of the coldest days NYC has seen in years, with daytime temperatures staying in the teens and very little relief from the cold. On top of the extreme cold, a major winter storm is expected late Saturday night through Monday. Snow is likely to begin in the city after midnight Saturday night and become heavy on Sunday. Current forecasts suggest at least 6 to 12 inches of snow in NYC, with the potential for more than a foot by the time the storm winds down. Travel will likely be severely impacted, especially on Sunday and Monday, with dangerous road conditions, possible transit delays, and flight disruptions. While a brief mix with sleet or freezing rain is possible Sunday night, most of the storm will fall as snow. Snow may continue lightly into Monday as the storm moves away, and bitter cold will follow, keeping snow and ice on the ground and making cleanup slower and more difficult. Coastal flooding is not expected to be a major issue for NYC at this time, though minor flooding in some back bay areas of Nassau County is possible late Sunday night. Residents should prepare now for extreme cold, power-straining heating demand, and significant winter weather impacts across the city.
