The American Red Cross has helped families pick up the pieces over the last month through extreme cold and major fires.

Last month's fire on Prospect Avenue in the Bronx became the deadliest in New York City in a quarter-century. Days later, another fire ravaged a building on Commonwealth Avenue.

"Specifically in the Bronx we've had 300 people assisted in 30 different incidents since Christmas Day," says Red Cross volunteer lead responder Phil Cogan. 

During that same time last year, the Red Cross says 84 people were helped. 

The disasters aren't just happening in the Bronx. Last week, three people were injured in a Canarsie fire and another seven were injured in a fire in Crown Heights. 

"In Brooklyn, we've had 30 incidents and 200 people assisted," Cogan says.

The Red Cross wants people to know that even as the smoke clears, it's still there for residents. 

"If they want come to us later, there's always that option," Cogan says. "They can come to our Manhattan office."
