Red Cross volunteers are installing free smoke alarms in homes Sunday to help to save lives.
The effort is part of the "Sound the Alarm" home fire safety and smoke alarm installation event in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
First, volunteers learn the proper way to install smoke alarms and then take to the streets to install them, replace batteries and help families create escape plans.
According to the Red Cross, almost two-thirds of home fire deaths were in homes without a working smoke alarm between 2007 and 2011.
