Hundreds of kindergarten students living in the Red Hook Houses are set to receive a $1,000 boost to their education.
Starting in January, every kindergartner living in the Red Hook Houses and enrolled in a New York City public school will get the money deposited into a 529 college savings account.
The investment is part of a partnership between the Red Hook Initiative, NYC Kids RISE and local community advocates.
Organizers say the effort is designed to build educational equity and financial literacy in Brooklyn’s largest public housing development, home to nearly 6,000 residents.
Beyond the initial investment, families will also gain access to financial literacy workshops.
Community leaders say the scholarships are about more than just money, they hope the program inspires families to plan for long-term success and encourages additional local partners to invest in the next generation.
