Renovations underway to create public plaza for pedestrians in Williamsburg

The New York City Department of Transportation is beginning renovations to the plaza outside of the Church of Annunciation on North Fifth Street in Williamsburg, in efforts to create more public spaces throughout the city.

The New York City Department of Transportation is beginning renovations to the plaza outside of the Church of Annunciation on North Fifth Street in Williamsburg, in efforts to create more public spaces throughout the city.
Officials from the corner church say the church applied to be a part of the NYC Plaza Program, which takes underused streets and coverts them into outdoor space for residents and pedestrians.
There are nearly 60 plazas currently open throughout the five boroughs, with plans to open more than a dozen others.
Officials say the public plaza will have city-provided chairs, tables, umbrellas and planters. Granite blocks, traffic posts and a new gravel top will be added as well.
The Department of Transportation says the goal is to turn streets into “vibrant pedestrian plazas that enhance safety, accessibility and create more walkable neighborhoods.”
The North Fifth Street plaza is expected to be completed by the summer.
