A new report reveals that the Bronx has the highest number of complaints about a lack of heat in homes.
The report from RentHop broke down 311 calls and found that the borough had by far the most heat complaints of any borough this winter.
While the report says heat and hot water complaints are up about 10% around the city during what they call "heat season," which starts on Oct. 1, the Bronx is clearly hit harder than anywhere else.
RentHop says that the Bronx received 10,000 more 311 heat complaints this winter than any other borough, despite having the fourth biggest population in the 2020 census.
The lack of heat is not just uncomfortable -- it's also a safety hazard because it increases the chances of accidents involving space heaters.
New York City law does require landlords to supply heat from Oct. 1 to May 31. The report says that 17 of the 20 neighborhoods with the most of those 311 calls are in the Bronx, led by Pelham Parkway.
City Council Member Marjorie Velázquez, who represents that area, says the best thing that people can do is keep making those reports to 311 and then to write down the complaint number and follow up with their local city council member, who can put pressure on the city the fix the issue.
"It is taking a step back and knowing your rights as a tenant," Velázquez says.
Velázquez also adds that it's important to report these problems because it helps city agencies track patterns and figure out what areas and agencies need to have more resources invested in them and any sort of infrastructure bills they should be pushing for.
News 12 reached out to the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development to ask if they had any response to the report but have not heard back.
