Changes to the identification of transgender people around the country are worrying some closer to home in Brooklyn. News 12 sat down with members from TQVoices— a trans and queer advocacy and visibility group, which works to educate the community on acceptance and understanding. Since taking office, President Donald Trump signed an executive order stating the U.S. government will only recognize two genders— male and female. Parker Wallace says he “just can’t go back” to living without, what he describes as acceptance for those who identify as a gender other than male or female. Susceptibility to hate is another one of this friend group’s fears. Mika Kauffman says that they feel like this order enables hate against those who are transgender. They are calling on the Brooklyn community to educate themselves if they are not familiar with advocacy groups, like TQVoices. The city’s LGBTQIA+ caucus says it will defend its transgender and gender non-confirming neighbors at all costs.
