The Town of Hempstead Zoning Board met Wednesday to discuss moving forward with construction on a proposed Mount Sinai South Nassau Medical Center in Wantagh.
The proposal would bring a 60,000-square-foot and $35 million renovation to the old Verizon building on Wantagh Avenue.
Residents have their concerns about the new building.
Steven Pinto moved behind the proposed location of the center and feels it could be a hazard for his newborn and others growing up in the neighborhood.
"They have been talking about having 800 cars in and out every single day out of that parking lot," Pinto says. "It's not going to mix well when you have kids running around."
Representatives from the hospital say it's necessary because of a lack of service in the area and an aging population.
"It's estimated by 2027 that 1 out of 5 people in the Wantagh community and neighboring will be over 65," says Mount Sinai South Nassau President Dr. Adhi Sharma. "Patients in that age group really do need resources like this available so they can have access to screening exams and other ongoing care."
The building is expected to be a one-stop shop for cancer care, radiology, women's care and other specialty practices.
News 12 is told that Wednesday's meeting was about hearing both sides' arguments and that no decision will be made.
