A group of Bushwick residents attended a community meeting Tuesday to voice their opposition toward a new homeless shelter set to open in the neighborhood at the end of the month.

Opponents of the plan say they're concerned about security and other negative effects the shelter may have on the up-and-coming neighborhood.

Currently, the building is a popular hostel that frequently hosts visitors to the area and has a basement bar.

At the end of the month, the four-story building will become a shelter for up to 140 men over 55 years old -- including some with substance abuse issues, according to the Department of Homeless Services.

The men are expected to stay for nine months before getting assistance finding permanent housing.

Officials say the shelter will provide in-house treatments for its residents' medical, psychiatric and drug problems. It will also offer job training.

Residents will have a 10 p.m. curfew and the facility will have around-the-clock security.

But opponents say a school down the block heightens their security concerns.
