Restaurant workers are calling on lawmakers and highlighting their need to earn a livable wage.
Tip workers are giving a thumbs down to what they earn.
Jose tells News 12 he works at a Bronx restaurant doing odd jobs. He says he is earning $10 an hour and barely able to provide for his family.
“We struggle. We need to work, we need to pay our bills and everything, and I am earning $10, maybe $11 an hour - and it doesn't cut it. It's not enough,” Jose tells News 12.
Jose and other food service workers rallied outside Assembly Member Carl Heastie’s office in Baychester Friday.
They are urging Heastie to back legislation that would guarantee a minimum wage of $15 an hour to tipped workers.
For months, rallies big and small have taken place across the city to demand a full minimum wage for tip workers.
The group, One Fair Wage, represents over 200 restaurant owners and staff. It has collected thousands of signatures from the food service industry.
Organizers say the pandemic has taken a toll on local restaurants. They say providing an hourly wage of $15 plus tips will help the struggling food service industry.
Advocates for Food Service Workers say they’ll keep the pressure on local lawmakers until all tipped workers are fairly compensated for their service.
