Some businesses along Mosholu Avenue in Riverdale are facing an uncertain future after being without gas for nearly three months. The outage began on Sept. 25 when Con Edison shut off the supply due to a gas leak.
Some shops, like New China Restaurant and P & D Laundromat, have remained closed since then. Other businesses, such as C-Town Supermarket, continue to operate under tough conditions.
“How I’m standing I don’t know,” said Piyush Patel, the manager of C-Town. “No heater, no gas line, no water, no nothing.”
The lack of heat is affecting both employees and customers. “Customers come here, they say too much cold,” Patel added. “It’s too cold, everybody sick.”
Mike, the owner of P & D Laundromat, says his business has been completely shut down.
“No gas means, No dryers,” he said. “I still gotta pay garbage pickup, gotta pay insurance, I gotta start machines twice a week.”
Mike fears the extended closure may put him out of business permanently.
“All my customers pretty much went elsewhere, so I don’t know if I’ll be able to open again,” he said.
Con Edison says the responsibility for fixing the issue falls on the landlord. Repairs must be completed before they can safely restore service. News 12 reached out to the landlord for comment, but calls went unanswered.
With no clear timeline for repairs, the situation has left local businesses in limbo, forcing tough decisions during the holiday season.
