Runners took to the streets of Brooklyn this morning during the annual RBC Half-Marathon.
It is the 41st year runners embarked on the 13.1-mile journey through Prospect Park, Ocean Parkway and reached the finish line at the Coney Island boardwalk.
Race director Ted Metellus says the damp weather wasn’t a deterrent for the approximately 26,000 people who participated in the event.
"This is perfect conditions for our runners. So nice and cool,” he said. “Little damp out there. Keeps you moving and grooving with no issues."
Leroy Cummings, a 70-year-old military veteran, says the run was personal for him.
"My family is diabetic. I buried my mother and two sisters because they were diabetic. I wanted to change that for my children,” he said.
Maggie Montoya was the first-place women’s winner and finished with a time of 1 hour and 10 minutes.
"I had a blast out there. This is probably the coolest finish line I've ever gone across,” she said.
The first-place men’s winner completed the marathon with a time of one hour and three minutes, which is a new record for the race.
