Low-income families in the borough are getting some much-needed relief this summer.
The Salvation Army in Brownsville, Bed-Stuy and Bushwick are all participating in the summer food service program, a U.S. Department of Agriculture initiative that provides meals to children up to 18 years old.
"We are meeting their needs holistically," said Captain Travis Barton, administrator of the program. "We are giving them a program--we are giving them a service for child care but we are also making sure they have meals and they are not going hungry."
Not only is the food free, but children in the program say it’s also tasty.
"I came home, I said 'Oh the mashed potato was yummy, can you make it?'" said one 8-year-old.
The summer program also gives children the opportunity to participate in different games and activities.
