Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) traveled to Brooklyn Monday to meet with the family of a 17-year-old honors student killed by a stray bullet last month in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
Nazareth Regional High School student Nyasia Pryer was shot Jan. 18. Police say the shooting happened at about 3:15 a.m. while Pryer attended a party on Fulton Street.
Gillibrand met with students, parents and educators at Nazareth and said she plans to work with Pryer's parents to present legislation intended to reduce gun violence.
Gillibrand, a little-known, pro-gun Democrat from upstate New York, was sworn in Jan. 27 as the state's junior U.S. senator. She has recently sought to broaden her previous positions on immigration and gay marriage.
Barbara Gil, the principal of Nazareth Regional High School, has said she was alarmed by the senator's pro-gun stance. Gillibrand has a 100 percent approval rating from the National Rifle Association.
AP wire services were used in this report.
