Sen. Martin Golden hosted his annual Sept. 11 memorial in Marine Park on Friday.
The ceremony included a 21-gun salute, a moment of silence and a candlelit vigil.
Many in attendance held candles symbolizing the lives lost and American flags, a sign of patriotism and solidarity.
Retired Sgt. Louis Licalzi, who was in attendance, said that out of the tragedy, the country has grown stronger.
"We will always unite in the midst of tragedies," Licalzi said.
