A plot of land in Soundview has earned the distinction as one of the 12 most toxic sites in New York state.
The Citizens' Environmental Coalition recently included the land at Story Avenue and the Bronx River Parkway in its Dirty Dozen Awards 2007 list. The group clams the site, which used to be home to an electronic manufacturing facility, is dangerous.
Advocates say they?re disturbed that the toxic site is adjacent to a school, near public housing and sits next to the Bronx River. They claim there is a link between increased area cancer rates and asthma and the site.
Critics want the owner to clean up the land. However, Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum says the law doesn't require the owner to clean up the site. Gotbaum and others say they are working with lawmakers to encourage results.
